The plug-in heater safety checklist we use in testing

Start with the socket. A heater drawing 1,200 to 1,500W should go straight into a wall outlet, never an extension lead, power strip or travel adapter. Those accessories are rated for far lower sustained loads, and they are the single most common cause of heater-related overheating.
Next, confirm two automatic cutoffs: overheat shutoff, which kills the element if the internal temperature climbs past its limit, and tip-over shutoff for any floor-standing unit. Direct plug-in models are inherently harder to knock over, which is part of their safety appeal, but the overheat cutoff is non-negotiable.
Give it space. Three feet of clearance in front of the vent, and nothing draped over the body — no towels drying, no curtain edges, no bedding. Fabric against a hot grille removes the airflow that keeps the element within its safe range.
Finally, check the shell temperature with the back of your hand after twenty minutes. A ceramic unit's housing should be warm, not painful. If a heater's outer surface is hot enough to hurt, it is not a unit to leave in a room with children or pets.
