Ceramic, oil-filled or infrared: which heater suits your room?

Ceramic heaters push air across a heated ceramic element with a fan. They warm a room fastest, respond quickly when you change the setting, and cool down quickly too. That makes them the right pick for bathrooms, home offices and any room you want warm on arrival rather than all day.

Oil-filled radiators heat a sealed reservoir and then radiate gently for a long time. They are slow to start and slow to stop, silent, and comfortable for an eight-hour stretch — a bedroom you occupy all night, or a study where fan noise would grate. They are also heavy and take up floor space permanently.

Infrared heaters warm objects and people directly instead of the air. Sit in front of one and you feel it immediately; walk away and the warmth stops. That directional quality suits a reading chair, a workshop or a draughty room where heating all the air would be wasteful, but it will never make a whole room feel evenly warm.

For most people heating one occupied room at a time, ceramic wins on responsiveness, and a direct plug-in ceramic unit adds the advantage of no floor footprint at all. Choose oil-filled if silence over long hours matters more than speed, and infrared if you only need warmth in one seat.
